It’s not and easy trick to learn, especially with a think denim… but it’s a great tool to use if you are teaching a child to sew straight. Bright mustard yellow thick thread and a beautiful indigo denim… a really cute 70’s overall dress pattern and VOILA! Here she is… Lily in her very cute outfit (that will last many a growing spree)! And…. Note that patch pocket!.. well done Lily!
Announcing new Children’s workshops at the Sewing Parlour for the summer Holidays….term time has ended and our regular weekly classes have finished, so I have decided to open the workshop all summer round. Classes for all age groups will be happening throughout the week, they are one off day classes you can book for your children ad hoc there is no need to commit to all of the classes. So as well as the usual dressmaking classes and beginners workshops for adults at the weekends and sewing surgeries during the week.) …We are set for a packed summer …
For the 7-10 age group I will be running a day class every Monday and Tuesday, and for the 11-16 age group every Wednesday of the holiday. Each day starts and ends at 10am-4pm… except the last week (in which I think by then I will need some hibernation time). Each class costs £40. There are only 4 spaces per class. For some projects I will be able to supply fabric but depending on the choice of project your child makes there may be some cost for fabric and haberdashery etc. Each child is catered for individually depending on skill level and experience and of course their interests … I am able to do this because of the small class is size and have always worked this way … so I will chat with you about fabric budget etc before your child chooses their project on the day.
So here are the dates:
Little Stitcher’s (ages 7-10yrs)
Mondays: 3rd , 10th, 17th, 24th of August
Tuesdays: 28th July, then 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th of August
Wednesday Sewing Club (ages 11-16yrs)
August 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th
Full payment will secure the space on your chosen days. (I will absolutely refund you this charge if I cancel the class for any reason. My refund policy is that if you cancel and are not able to attend for any reason then I will refund you if I am able to fill the space or you can offer the space to a friend. But no refund is available unless the space is filled. Unlikely in the children’s classes as the waiting lists are long.)
Just a note about DBS checks… (very necessary while working with children) My current one is out of date so I need to update it. I am in the process of doing this application so please bare with me while I get it all legal… If you require the certificate then I will be able to show you once it comes through.
It’s probably best to ring me to book as I take a bit of time to get back to you by email or facebook messenger and places may go quickly… I also now take Visa debit card payments over the phone (I have entered the modern day! … it makes life simpler)
Contact details are: 07545757592
Best wishes and a happy Summer Holidays to you all … Anna x
Ps… Here are some pictures to show the achievements of the children who have attended the term time classes… there are more on our Instagram page too
Here is Karig’s first ever project completed at the studio. The Colette Pattern ‘Crepe’. Karig joined the Wednesday after school sewing class only a few months ago and has already completed this dress …. I love Colette Patterns – have I said this before? The pattern instruction is so clear, their motto being ‘Patterns that teach’. I hope Colette gets to see this, because Karig is 12 years old and as a first time sewer, was able to follow and complete this dress very competently. So thank you Colette for your fabulous pattern and … Beautiful work Karig!
Meet Vicky… She is aged 13 and a bona fide dressmaker. This is her very first garment… I am so proud to be able to post this, she has tirelessly, every Wednesday after school (but with a fair amount of chatting and biscuit munching in between) stitched this fine cotton lawn dress and lined it with muslin.. Her hand stitching is effortlessly neat, a real natural. The fabric was her choice and it’s beautiful from Merchant & Mills. The pattern is from the pattern library at the studio…We went through a fair amount of adaptations while the project progressed, she didn’t like the cap sleeves so we modified the armholes … the hem was too long and got a rather hefty chop, she took it all within her stride and now rather than having a dress she wanted to put in the bin (out of shear frustration) ….. SHE LOVES IT! (As do I )
Meet Helen Custerson of Sew St Leonards (she sews for a living and makes beautiful curtains by day) but dressmaking was a mystery until she attended the Intro to Dressmaking… Merchant & Mills produce beautiful patterns and we use them here all the time at the studio. This is the Union Dress .. and Helen made it in a soft light denim that she bought from their store in Rye. Buttonholes and putting in sleeves were the nemesis here and she handles it with ease (excuse the pun..) Well done Helen and I hope you get a lot of wear out of your fabulous dress
Yesterday was spent sewing with the Absolute Beginner Class. The studio was bursting at the seams! (ha..Sorry) Buttonholes, zips, piping … bag making, laying patterns and fabric choice, machine maintenance… have I forgotten anything? Probably … we only had one day. But it was a laugh and we have some very happy sewers now. With ever more classes being added to the Sewing Parlour diary I have enlisted the help of one Fabulous Lady to aid and abet our sewing revolution. Maika Crampton of Freya von Bulow Paper Couture and Front Row South Coast will be the Absolute Beginner tutor from next month. Her work is exceptional and I’m so happy to have her apart of the team. Her new dates for the upcoming classes are 30th May and 13th June. have a look on the EVENTS PAGE for all the information about booking. And here .. is some inspiration, some photos of a day in the life of the Absolute Beginner Class.
I think half the country has been inspired by The Great British Sewing Bee lately … I spent a lovely Saturday with The Absolute Beginner Class and their enthusiasm has been so inspired by the show. Tonight is the ‘Little Sewers’ class – a regular Monday after school club of sewing mayhem for kids aged 7-10…. and there is a busy week ahead of dressmaking classes …. So keen is everyone to get sewing I have added more classes too, so here goes …
