Summer Holidays Are Here!

SummerFlyerSummer is here and at the La La Rookh Workshop we ramp up the sewing here to monumental levels…. Children can come and play all day making and creating. We have mountains of projects to choose from… Spaces are limited because we limit the numbers to 5 children a day. So the dates for this year are:

JULY:   Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th

 Week 1:   Wednesday 10th , Thursday 11th , Friday 12th

Week 2: Tuesday 16th,     Wednesday 17th  Thursday 18th  Friday 19th

 Week 3: Tuesday 23rd  Wednesday24th  Thursday25th  Friday26th

 Week 4: Tuesday 30th Wednesday31st  Thursday1st  Friday 2nd

The classes book quickly but I always have cancellations and shifting about so it is worth calling throughout the summer weeks to see if I have spaces on the day …

Ok, booking terms: Its £40.00 for the days class, this includes most haberdashery etc , and like termly classes there is a lot of free fabrics to choose from for small projects. If your child would like to make a garment that requires more than one metre, then there will be a charge for fabric (but I do try to steer them in the free fabric section) , you are welcome to bring fabrics from home also.

To book call Anna on 07545757592 .. and reserve your spaces by paying for them with a 50% deposit. I am unable to reserve them without payment due to cancellations and being unable to fill cancellations on the day. I hope you all understand… however I do have a cancellation policy, if you give me 3 days notice I can postpone or swap days or refund payments in full.

I wish you all a wonderful summer of fun…

Best wishes,

Lily’s Flat Felled Seam a’thon…

It’s not and easy trick to learn, especially with a think denim… but it’s a great tool to use if you are teaching a child to sew straight. Bright mustard yellow thick thread and a beautiful indigo denim… a really cute 70’s overall dress pattern and VOILA! Here she is… Lily in her very cute outfit (that will last many a growing spree)!  And…. Note that patch pocket!.. well done Lily! lilyspattern lilypattern1 lilypattern2

We are going to the cinema!

What is not to love here for us sewing enthusiasts. Our local luxurious cinema  Kino Teatr is hosting this film.. I have hijacked it, and turned it into a ‘meet up with fellow sewers’ fest. Its been my plan to see it for weeks now and I’m a sucker for anything that, 1. Reminds me of home (Australia) and 2. Involves a romantic spin on sewing (because well sewing day in and day out to steep deadlines can seem like just plain drudgery at times. 3. Liam Hemsworth’s naked torso is a bonus but I’m far more interested in the dresses actually)..  If you would like to come then look here on the facebook events page and it will direct you to the Kino Teatr website and you can buy tickets online (£9.00) … we will troop en masse to The St Leonard pub after for a debrief. Please join us on the 26th March 7pm in (currently) wet and wild St Leonards on Sea.

Summer Sewing at the Workshop…

Announcing new Children’s workshops at the Sewing Parlour for the summer Holidays….term time has ended and our regular weekly classes have finished, so I have decided to open the workshop all summer round. Classes for all age groups will be happening throughout the week, they are one off day classes you can book for your children ad hoc there is no need to commit to all of the classes. So as well as the usual dressmaking classes and beginners workshops for adults at the weekends and sewing surgeries during the week.) …We are set for a packed summer  …

For the 7-10 age group I will be running a day class every Monday and Tuesday, and for the 11-16 age group every Wednesday of the holiday. Each day starts and ends at 10am-4pm… except the last week (in which I think by then I will need some hibernation time). Each class costs £40. There are only 4 spaces per class. For some projects I will be able to supply fabric but depending on the choice of project your child makes there may be some cost for fabric and haberdashery etc. Each child is catered for individually depending on skill level and experience and of course their interests … I am able to do this because of the small class is size and have always worked this way … so I will chat with you about fabric budget etc before your child chooses their project on the day.

So here are the dates:

Little Stitcher’s (ages 7-10yrs)

Mondays:   3rd , 10th, 17th, 24th of August

Tuesdays: 28th July,  then 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th of August

Wednesday Sewing Club (ages 11-16yrs)

August 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th

Full payment will secure the space on your chosen days. (I will absolutely refund you this charge if I cancel the class for any reason. My refund policy is that if you cancel and are not able to attend for any reason then I will refund you if I am able to fill the space or you can offer the space to a friend. But no refund is available unless the space is filled. Unlikely in the children’s classes as the waiting lists are long.)

Just a note about DBS checks… (very necessary while working with children) My current one is out of date so I need to update it. I am in the process of doing this application so please bare with me while I get it all legal… If you require the certificate then I will be able to show you once it comes through.

It’s probably best to ring me to book as I take a bit of time to get back to you by email or facebook messenger and places may go quickly… I also now take Visa debit card payments over the phone (I have entered the modern day! … it makes life simpler)

Contact details are: 07545757592

Best wishes and a happy Summer Holidays to you all … Anna x

Ps… Here are some pictures to show the achievements of the children who have attended the term time classes… there are more on our Instagram page too

There is so much going on at the studio at the moment its hard to know where to begin. I know the blog has been quiet, but here in the heart of it has been anything but, I have been sewing so much I feel like my eyes are on stalks. There is news soon about new stock we are selling and a pattern brand so exclusive it’s unavailable anywhere else in the U.K .. I know that you will go nuts about it. We are busy sampling at the moment so you are able to visit and try on the garments.  But this post is to announce new classes and courses for the summer holidays. The Sewing Surgery is a new concept to the workshop and is a 1 hour slot of time that you are able to book between the lessons and courses here.

Have you got to a tricky point in your project and you just can’t seem to progress? Have you an unfinished garment and you haven’t the time to finish it?  Is it that you have worked so hard to complete a garment and you’ve put it on and it just doesn’t fit quite right. It’s so frustrating when you have got to ‘that’ point …. it goes in the project pile and never gets seen again. The Sewing Surgery is here to help you get the motivation back to finish that project. At the workshop you can book a surgery hour for £8.00. We can help sort out your project with a few ideas (without having to book a whole course…). Or just come in and use the studio facilities, our large cutting table or example. There are 4 spaces per hour so you are likely to meet fellow sewers too.
Fitting, Buttonholes, Zippers, Understanding a tricky pattern, and just general advice to help you on your way… Take advantage of our machines and the one-step embroidery button hole. Or have a zipper tutorial.

Book with Anna on: 07545757592     or email:

Karig’s Colette Pattern ‘Crepe’

Here is Karig’s first ever project completed at the studio. The Colette Pattern ‘Crepe’. Karig joined the Wednesday after school sewing class only a few months ago and has already completed this dress …. I love Colette Patterns – have I said this before? The pattern instruction is so clear, their motto being ‘Patterns that teach’. I hope Colette gets to see this, because Karig is 12 years old and as a first time sewer, was able to follow and complete this dress very competently. So thank you Colette for your fabulous pattern and … Beautiful work Karig!

Vicky’s Summer Dress – Simplicity 3532

Meet Vicky… She is aged 13 and a bona fide dressmaker. This is her very first garment… I am so proud to be able to post this, she has tirelessly, every Wednesday after school (but with a fair amount of chatting and biscuit munching in between) stitched this fine cotton lawn dress and lined it with muslin.. Her hand stitching is effortlessly neat, a real natural. The fabric was her choice and it’s beautiful from Merchant & Mills. The pattern is from the pattern library at the studio…Simplicity 3532We went through a fair amount of adaptations while the project progressed, she didn’t like the cap sleeves so we modified the armholes … the hem was too long and got a rather hefty chop, she took it all within her stride and now rather than having a dress she wanted to put in the bin (out of shear frustration) ….. SHE LOVES IT! (As do I )

vicky2What are you going to make next Vicky?
